David and Goliath (1960)

The story of the film is adapted from the Old Testament: The Philistines declare war on the Israelites and wrench the Arch of the Alliance from them. Saul, the king of Israel, listens meanwhile to the words of the prophets who tell him that the new king will be a young shepherd called David. But still David has to fight the enemy in form of their mighty giant, Goliath. Starring Orson Welles, Ivica Pajer, and Eleonora Rossi Drago. Orson Welles is King Saul in this Italian Biblical sword and sorcery epic. Time to listen to the Prophet Samuel.

Curse of the Aztec Mummy (1957)

The evil Dr. Krupp, trying to get possession of the Aztec princess Xochitl’s jewels, hypnotizes her current reincarnation, Flor, to get her to reveal the jewels’ location—Xochitl’s tomb. Confusion reigns as Krupp and his thugs are opposed by Flor’s lover, Dr. Almada, his assistant, and wrestling superhero, El Angel. Krupp finally meets his match, however, when he comes up against Popoca, the warrior mummy who guards Xochitl’s tomb. Starring Ramón Gay, Rosita Arenas, Crox Alvarado. One of those weird, psychotronic Mexican mummy movies.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920)

Dr. Henry Jekyll experiments with scientific means of revealing the hidden, dark side of man and releases a murderer from within himself. The first screen adaption of the Robert Louis Stevenson book. Starring John Barrymore, Martha Mansfield, and Brandon Hurst. Drew Barrymore is not in this movie.

Torture Ship (1939)

A mad scientist performs experiments on "the criminal mind" on captured criminals on board his private ship. This curious movie is taken from a story by Jack London “A Thousand Deaths.” George Wallace Sayre. Starring Lyle Talbot, Irving Pichel, and Julie Bishop.

A Farewell to Arms (1932)

A tale of the love between ambulance driver Lt. Henry and Nurse Catherine Barkley during World War I from the novel by Ernest Hemingway. The action takes place in Italy and the two fall in love during the war and will stop at nothing to be together. The film also analyses Lt. Henry's feelings on war and the purpose of fighting. Starring Gary Cooper, Helen Hayes and Adolphe Menjou. One of the first anti-war movies. Little did they know what was coming up.

Man in the Attic (1953)

After an enigmatic, self-described pathologist rents the attic room of a Victorian house, his landlady begins to suspect her lodger is Jack the Ripper. London, 1888: on the night of the third Jack the Ripper killing, soft-spoken Mr. Slade, a research pathologist, takes lodgings with the Harleys, including a gloomy attic room for "experiments." Mrs. Harley finds Slade odd and increasingly suspects the worst; her niece Lily (star of a decidedly Parisian stage revue) finds him interesting and increasingly attractive. Is Lily in danger, or are her aunt's suspicions merely a red herring? Starring Jack Palance, Constance Smith, and Byron Palmer.

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1920)

Francis, a young man, recalls in his memory the horrible experiences he and his fiancée Jane recently went through. It is the annual fair in Holstenwall. Francis and his friend Alan visit The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, an exhibit where the mysterious doctor shows the somnambulist Cesare, and awakens him for some moments from his death-like sleep. When Alan asks Cesare about his future, Cesare answers that he will die before dawn. The next morning Alan is found dead. Francis suspects Cesare of being the murderer, and starts spying on him and Dr. Caligari. The following night Cesare is going to stab Jane in her bed, but softens when he sees the beautiful woman, and instead of committing another murder, he abducts her. Jane's father awakens because of the noise, and he and some servants follow the fleeing Cesare. When Cesare cannot outrun his pursuers anymore, he gently places Jane down on the ground, and runs away. Francis and the police investigate the caravan of Dr. Caligari, but the doctor succeeds in slipping away. Francis pursues the fleeing Dr. Caligari, and sees him disappear into a madhouse. Francis enters the madhouse, where he is sure he will find the truth behind all these mysterious events. Stars Werner Krauss, Conrad Veidt, and Friedrich Feher. A classic German silent horror film.

The Manster (1959)

An American reporter in Japan is sent to interview an eccentric Japanese scientist working on bizarre experiments in his mountain laboratory. When the doctor realizes that the hapless correspondent is the perfect subject for his next experiment, he drugs the unfortunate man and injects him with a serum that gradually transforms him into a hideous, two-headed monster. Starring Peter Dyneley, Jane Hylton, and Tetsu Nakamura. That weird eye on the shoulder is pretty creepy!

The Two Gladiators (1964)

Once upon a time there were born two twin boys to Emperor Marcus Aurelius and for reasons of dynasty the birth of twins was kept secret. One of the twins was supposed to be drowned at birth but fate intervenes and the kid is brought up in a good household and enters Rome's legions. Starring Richard Harrison, Moira Orfei, and Alberto Farnese. One of the better gladiator movies of the 60s.

Cleopatra’s Daughter (1960)

Cleopatra, after the civil war that followed the assassination of Caesar, met with Marc Antony in Assyria where they planned the defense of Egypt against the Romans. Before leaving, Cleopatra entrusted her young daughter, Shila, to the rulers of Assyria to be brought up as their own. After Marc Antony's defeat and Cleopatra's death, Egypt, for the next twenty years, was torn apart and ruled by a youthful Pharaoh, Nemorat, with his despot Queen Mother, Tegi, who desired to unite both kingdoms and strengthen her son's rule by conquering Assyria and making Shila, now a beautiful woman, his queen. Starring Debra Paget, Erno Crisa and Yvette Lebon. Got to love Debra Paget as the daughter of Cleopatra. A good film on spectacular ancient Egypt!

The Scarlet Pimpernel (1934)

London fop Percy Blakeney is also secretly the Scarlet Pimpernel who, in a variety of disguises, makes repeated daring trips to France to save aristocrats from Madame Guillotine. His unknowing wife is also French, and she finds that her brother has been arrested by the Republic to try and get her to find out who "that damned elusive Pimpernel" really is. Starring Leslie Howard, Merle Oberon, and Raymond Massey.

Two Lost Worlds (1951)

When the American clipper ship "The Queen" is attacked by pirates off the Hebrides in 1830, Mate Kirk Hamilton is injured and must be put ashore at Queensland Colony, Australia, for treatment and recuperation. There, he meets and falls in love with Elaine Jeffries, daughter of the magistrate and all-but-fiancée to rancher Martin Shannon. She also finds herself attracted to Kirk, and a rivalry develops between the two men. Meantime the pirates, led by Captain Hackett, decide to raid the colony and, in the process kidnap Elaine and her friend. Nancy. Kirk, and Shannon lead the pursuit, having not only the romantic triangle to resolve, but the pirates to overcome and, along the way, being stranded on a volcanic island inhabited by dinosaurs. Starring Gunsmoke’s James Arness, Bill Kennedy and Kasey Roger (aka Laura Elliot).

Son of Ingagi (1940)

A wealthy old recluse wills her fortune and exceedingly-gloomy house to a pair of newlyweds, Robert and Eleanor Lindsay. Years before, Dr. Jackson had been in love with Eleanor's father, who was younger than her and did not return her love. N'Gina, an ape-man, Dr. Jackson brought back from Africa drinks a potion she had concocted in her laboratory, for a specific reason, but N'Gina turns on her and kills her, which is not what she had planned. Then he murders her attorney, Bradshaw, who is hunting for $20,000 in gold she had hidden in her gloomy house. Her brother, Zeno, an ex-convict, finds the gold but N'Gina isn't bothered by the bullets Zeno fires at him and kills him also. Detective Nelson then goes looking for it. Starring Zack Williams, Laura Bowman, and Alfred Grant. Can people get turned into Bigfoot?

The Iron Mask (1929)

A Three Musketeers movie! King Louis XIII of France is thrilled to have born to him a son—an heir to the throne. But when the queen delivers a twin, Cardinal Richelieu sees the second son as a potential for revolution, and has him sent off to Spain to be raised in secret to ensure a peaceful future for France. Alas, keeping the secret means sending Constance, lover of D'Artagnan, off to a convent. D'Artagnan hears of this and rallies the Musketeers in a bid to rescue her. Unfortunately, Richelieu out-smarts the Musketeers and banishes them forever. Richelieu enlists D'Artagnan to look after and protect the young prince. Meanwhile, de Rochefort learns of the twins and Richelieu's plans, and kidnaps the twin, raising him in secret. Many years later, with Richelieu dead and the young prince crowned King Louis XIV, Rochefort launches his plan. The king is kidnapped, replaced with his twin, put in an iron mask so as not to be recognized, and led off to a remote castle to be held prisoner. Louis XIV is able to alert D'Artagnan, who realizes that only his friends Athos, Porthos, and Aramis can help him, so he reunites the Musketeers to derail Rochefort's nefarious plot but at a heavy toll. Starring Douglas Fairbanks, Belle Bennett, and Dorothy Revier. A great chance to see Fairbanks in action!

Haldane of the Secret Service (1923)

Houdini stars in this exciting silent movie! Heath Haldane (Houdini) tracks down a vicious gang of counterfeiters, narrowly missing death several times. He must rescue Adele Ormsby, whom he loves despite her pending marriage. Starring Harry Houdini, Gladys Leslie, and William Humphrey. This was Houdini’s last movie.

Terror Island (1920)

Houdini stars in this exciting silent movie! An inventor travels to the South Seas, where there is buried treasure belonging to a girl. The girl's father is being held captive by cannibals until she returns a pearl that belongs to one of their idols. Starring Harry Houdini, Jack Brammall, and Lila Lee. Houdini at his best!

The Man From Beyond (1922)

The body of a man, Howard Hillary, frozen for a hundred years, is found in the Arctic ice. Thawed out and awakened, Hillary insists that a young woman, Felice, is his fiancée from a century before. Hillary is interned in a mental institution but escapes and realizes the truth of where he is and that Felice is actually the descendant of his own Felice from long ago. Hillary joins her in searching for her father, who has been abducted by someone known to both. Starring Harry Houdini, Arthur Maude, and Albert Tavernier.

Sins of Rome (1953)

74 B.C. Somewhere in the Roman Empire, Spartacus, a young officer, is condemned to be a slave because he hit a superior. Brought back to Roma in a gladiators' school, he escapes and stirs up all the slaves in a revolt against the Roman Empire. Staring Massimo Girotti,, Ludmilla Tchérina, and Yves Vincent. Before GLADIATOR there was SINS OF ROME known as SPARTACO in Italy and other Latin speaking countries. Time to get out your sword and fight!

Frozen Alive (1966)

Starring Mark Stevens, Marianne Koch, and Wolfgang Lukschy. Maybe you want to be frozen alive or maybe you don’t. Life can get complicated. A curious 1960s movie.
